Supporting Your Child's Learning

From September 2014, the National Curriculum has been much more demanding and that expectations in all areas of learning have risen, with learning objectives being taught approximately two years earlier than previously.

To assist you in supporting your child, the following expectations are in place for home reading in our school:

  • Year 3 children read 3 times a week for a duration of 20 minutes each time
  • Year 4 children read 4 times a week for a duration of 20 minutes each time
  • Year 5 children read 4 times a week for a duration of 30 minutes each time
  • Year 6 children read 4 times a week for a duration of 40 minutes each time

Each year group runs a termly reading race and those children who read the required amount each week at home, and have their reading records signed, are invited to a year group reading treat at the end of the term to say a huge well done for meeting our reading expectations.

At the October parents' evening you will receive a list of recommended reads. These are range high quality texts by a range of authors to give your child a diverse reading experience.

Below are some links to a set of age appropriate high quality texts that you can look at with your children and find out more about each one through clicking on the book cover.

The National Curriculum times tables expectation is that pupils are secure in all tables, up to 12 x 12, by the end of Year 4. From September 2018, all pupils will be tested at the end of Year 4 on their tables knowledge using a computer based assessment provided by the Standards and Testing Authority (STA).
